When there's only one signal, you have to pay attention to it no matter what. However, things change when there are many signals, as when there's a green light on the right and a red one on the left. Here, you'd have to follow the red light instructions if you wanted to travel straight or make a left turn, and the green  light instructions if you wanted to go right.
